Thought of the Day
Article 1: LEADERSHIP TELLS PEOPLE WHAT THEY NEED TO HEAR; NOT NECESSARILY WHAT THEY WANT TO HEAR!
Article 2: Are you a light bulb or a laser beam?

"When the door of opportunity closes, another opens, but often times we look so long at the closed door that we don't see the one which has been opened for us".

From time to time we have downline members who make a major
mistake in judgment or business ethics. As leaders, we must address these
issues, and sometimes that is not an easy thing to do. We must be strong enough
to tell people what "they" need to hear, not necessarily
"want" to hear.
In her book Mary Kay Ashe says we should always attempt to sandwich difficult
issues, and criticism between two layers of praise.
I believe in you because, followed by the issue that must be corrected, followed
by I still believe in you.
When leadership doesn't handle the difficult issues, eventually a "free for
all" circus attitude can be developed within your downline, and as I have
witnessed, within the companies themselves.
Leadership must love people enough to tell them the truth. We must tell them
again, "What they need to hear, not necessarily want to hear". Your
downline doesn't care how much you know, until they know how much you care.
Leadership must be tough sometimes.
Will some people let you down? Absolutely! However, in your gut, you will know
that you did and said all you could do and say. If and when they blame you for
their shortcomings, even if no one else knows, you and them both will know the
truth. Be tough, love your people, and tell them the truth. Leadership who
doesn't challenge people to grow, learn, develop, get better, and become all
they can be, is not leadership.

A light bulb illuminates a broad area -- but a laser cuts
through steel!
I remember several years ago seeing the movie "City Slickers" starring
Billy Crystal and Jack Palance. Seems Crystal's character was going through the
proverbial mid-life crisis, and he and some buddies decided to go out and play
cattle rustler for a week. Remember this one?
Well, in the midst of Crystal's confusion (and life-search), Palances' character
"Curly" seemed to have it all together. Crystal asked him, "What
is the secret to life?" At which point Curly would always hold up his index
finger and say, "One thing" before riding away.
In frustration Crystal finally asked, "What is that one thing?" To
which Curly answered, "That is what you have to figure out."
You see, if we are not careful, we live our life like a light-bulb versus a
laser beam. Never finding and deciding upon our "one thing."
A light bulb gives off diffused light -- it can illuminate a large area...but a
laser beam can cut through steel!
You cannot serve two masters; you cannot ride two horses at the same time. The
great teacher told us, "If your eye be single...your whole body will be
full of light," (light = truth and power).
In what ways are you living your life like a light bulb? Becoming a jack of all
trades but a MASTER of NONE? Very few individuals ever master anything -- they
don't find and commit to their own "one thing."
What do you need to let go of? Where do you need to refocus? What do you want to
accomplish with the rest of your life?
I encourage you to practice "The Curly Principle," to find your one
thing and commit to focus with laser intensity! Then exploit your one thing in
the service of others and you absolutely MUST win.
Have a great week and make your life magnificent,
Your coach,
James
