THE PRICE OF THE PROMISE

Let me tell you a story. Mark Yarnell, minister in a small town in Texas, was headed for bankruptcy and just about to lose his car and home. He looked for a way out and discovered Network Marketing.

Luckily, he had a wise sponsor. The sponsor gave Mark "THE PROMISE": THIS BUSINESS CAN SET YOU FREE FINANCIALLY IN ONE TO THREE YEARS. But he also gave him "THE PRICE": TO SUCCEED, YOU WILL HAVE TO FACE AND CONQUER 4 MAJOR ENEMIES. Mark said, "It's a deal."

He then invited 200 friends over to his house to watch a video. 80 said "No, not interested." Mark had encountered ENEMY #1: Rejection. He thought, "No problem. My sponsor warned me about that. I've got 120 people still coming over."

Guess what? 50 didn't show up. He had just met ENEMY #2: Deception. Mark thought, "No problem, my sponsor warned me about that. I've got 70 people who watched the tape." Guess what? 57 said, "Not interested." He had just encountered ENEMY #3: Apathy. Undaunted, Mark thought, "No problem. 13 people signed up."

Guess what? 12 of them dropped out of the business shortly. ENEMY #4: Attrition had left Mark with just one serious associate. To this day, that single distributor earns Mark over $50,000 per month.

You may have heard of Bill Britt, one of the most successful distributors in Amway. Some years ago, 20/20 did a feature story on Amway. They spent 19 minutes interviewing whiners and complainers - several distributors who had failed and showed the garages full of products they couldn't sell. During the last minute of the show, Mr. Britt was interviewed in front of his palatial home. He was asked, "Mr. Britt, this business has obviously worked for you. What's your secret?"

He replied, "There is no secret. I simply showed the plan to 1200 people. 900 said, 'No.' and only 300 signed up. Out of those 300, only 85 did anything at all. Out of those 85 only 35 were serious, and out of those 35, 11 made me a millionaire." Like Mark Yarnell, Bill worked through the numbers.

Jason Boreyko, now president of New Vision, told this story recently. When he was a distributor in Matol, he signed up 50 people. He heard a lot of "Nos." on the way to those 50. Jason took one man, who he knew would be terrific in the business, to lunch, told him about the business and the man said "No." Jason took the man to lunch again the next month and told him the updates. Once again the man said, "No." Jason sent him some more information and took him to lunch again the next month. And again the man said, "No." That went on for six months. The seventh month, something had changed for the man, and he said, "Yes." That man made Jason over one million dollars. Jason also worked through his numbers.

(*) According to Richard Poe in "Wave Three", while starting Amway, Rich DeVos and Jay Van Andel, America's eleventh richest people, recruited 500 people. 495 dropped out. The five that didn't quit built Amway. All $7 billion of Amway's business was built under those 5 people. Jay and Rich had to work through their numbers. There are many similar stories. Here's the lesson: Your success is directly related to the degree to which you are willing to work to find others like yourself who are committed to succeed. Mark Yarnell's odds were 1 out of 200. Bill Britt's were 11 out of 1200. Jason Boreyko's odds were 1 out of 50. Would you be willing to go through 200 people to find the 1 who will make you $50,000 a month? Or go through 200 people to become a millionaire? Or hear uncounted "No's." to sign up 50 people to find a million dollar person? I hope you will.... It's easier when you know the odds up front.

But here's the catch: You have your own set of odds and you won't know what they are until AFTER YOU'VE SUCCEEDED. So if you've gone through 50 or 100 people and you haven't found 1 serious person yet, you can either give up and assume the business doesn't work, or recognize that you are working through your own numbers.

THE END
...or is it just THE BEGINNING?
You decide!

Reseller or MLM???

There's been a great volume of opinion, spoken over a long period of time, about this very question of whether a person should go "Reseller or MLM."

On the one hand, resellers point to the nearly instant profits of a simple sale made, no levels, no residuals, just the simplicity of a product sold and a commission earned.

On the other hand, mlmers point to the build up of long-term residual earnings, which have made "more millionaires than real estate." The mlmer is often willing to forego a large reseller commission, in order to work on the build up of those long-term residual earnings, from "sponsor driven duplication" in their downlines.

The question is: Who is right?

The answer is: Both!

It is foolish for the mlmer to thumb their noses at "straight and easy" reseller commissions, just as it is foolish for the resellers to thumb their noses at long-term build-up of residual earnings.

A more balanced approach is to offset inherent weaknesses between the two. The reseller program is weak, in terms of building up residual income through sponsor-driven duplication. There are no levels for this. But, the mlmer program is often weak, in terms of straight and immediate commission from direct sales. Commissions are spread out among levels, in order to make those levels possible.

The answer to all of this is simply: "Direct Sales."

Every government in the world works very dilligently to try to make mlm programs conform to some kind of reasonable expectation of "Direct Sales." This is because it is direct sales that seperates a ponzi scheme from a legitimate mlm. But, it is just here that all the difficulties arise.

One of the proven weaknesses of mlm is the generally acknowledged failure of mlm to provide money fast enough to suit most people. It takes time to build an organization, but people are impatient. Then, when you are spreading the commission over many levels, the time factor becomes glaringly obvious. Yes, during the latter stages of anyone's organizational growth they will make more money than the direct reseller, but, all during that building stage, the reseller wasn't going without! Instead, during that tedious period for the mlmer, the reseller was plucking straight, up-front commissions, all along, enjoying the immediacy of payout, rather than looking to the future for built up residual gains.

One of the greatest difficulties mlm has always had is providing a product for resale that the general public would want to buy, anyway, whether it were mlm or not. Even though mlm comes "factory-direct," by-passing typical supply chains, it re-invents those supply chains within its own company-wide distribution and profit-sharing policies. The end result is that an mlm product is more likely to cost more, not less, although the upside to this is that the distributors share the wealth, instead of one or two sub-wholesalers, along the traditional wholesale-to-retail supply chain. But, it's just that fact that often causes the general public to turn away from mlm. If they can get it cheaper, without having to sell it, many of them would rather skip the whole mlm process and just go down to the local store and get it quick.

Nevertheless, the question is not whether mlm works, because mlm makes millionaires out of regular people every year. That's just a fact and no one can argue with that. The question is: "Is it wise for an mlmer to throw away straight commissions, while they spend all that time working on building up residual income?"

In my professional opinion, the strain of doing without immediate commissions is often too much for needy people to bear, so they quit. Instead, if they had supplemented their long-term residual build up plans with straight reseller commissions, they would have been alot better off, because they could have had the best of both worlds: immediate cash in hand from reseller commissions and the build-up of long-term residual gains from sponsor-driven duplication in their downlines. In other words, don't go hungry all summer while waiting for the fall harvest. You have to eat all year long!

This is why you will always see me recommending both straight-no-levels reseller programs and long-term-yes-levels mlms, because the two should be married, not in opposition to each other. A hundred bucks is a hundred bucks. If you make a few straight commissions along the way, how can that do anything but help you? It takes the pressure and the strain off the patience it requires to build a large mlm downline for yourself.

People try to by-pass this process by rushing to be first in line for every new mlm program that comes along, hoping to capitalize on the momentum. This doesn't work very well for the majority of people, because only one person can be first and everyone else will be less than that, progressively on down the lines. It is, actually, a very bad thing for the average mlm company, because of the horror of watching giant chunks of downlines quit, after they conclude they missed the momentum, and shove off to find the next new wonder to come down the pike. It is, in fact, at that point, that the absconder type of operator will desert their company and skip town with the cash. The absconder looks at the peak of excitement, sees that peak drop off, then skips town, because the absconder types just don't have it in them for "a second wind." You might even know of some unscrupulous operators, who keep playing that first rush, then go on to introducing a new program, always tagging that first rush of sales, built up by the "pre-launch-fever."

My point is: when it comes to mlm versus reseller programs, it's best and most profitable to spread your efforts out a little and enjoy the immediate income of the reseller program, while at the same time building up all the residual income you can from mlm.

I also truly believe: if you present this philosophy to the people you advertise to, those who join your list, subscribers you may acquire, and contacts in general, it is my conviction you will help more people succeed faster, produce less quitters, and build a reputation for empowering people to profit.

It is important that you, yourself, profit. But, when you are in the money-making opportunities business, which is really what you are in, the more people you can make show a profit, the better off you, yourself, will be financially and in terms of your confidence, once again bolstering your ability to be an even more effective salesperson.

Reseller is not better than mlm and mlm is not better than reseller. They are both highly attractive for different reasons.
